10 Tips For Good Study Skills
(A resource guide for parents by Family Corner)

One of the main things that students struggle with are proper study habits. Developing a habit can take a couple of weeks, so be consistent, and implement these ten tips to help you study better.

1. Create a study place in your home or perhaps at the local library and a study time.
If you have a desk use it to study. Study at a regular time each day. If no desk is available, establish a "study place" like the kitchen table or computer room.

2. Once you set a time, study immediately.
Don't fall into other distractions, like facebooking or answering emails. Do those things later, use those as a reward when you get your studying done!

3. Plan what you need to accomplish.
At the beginning of the study session, write down exactly what you want to get done (complete two chapters of reading, start draft paper or finish a paper, research, etc).

4. Break large tasks into smaller ones.
For example, if an essay is to be written, the tasks might include coming up with a thesis, writing a solid first paragraph, planning out the points that need to be covered, researching those points, writing each section, etc.

5. Keep a "log book" or record of needs to be accomplished in each study section.
You can look over it later and impress yourself.

6. Keep studying supplies in a handy place, in your designated study area or in tupperwear container.
Organize them so you can grab what you want quickly, without having to rummage around.

7. Be aware of when you start daydreaming, and stop right away.
Concentrate for blocks of time, but be sure to allow yourself regular breaks to refresh your brain. Try studying for 45 minutes, then resting for 15 minutes.

8. Getting enough sleep is important for effective studying and remembering.
Be sure you have a reasonable amount of sleep each night. Avoid caffeine a few hours before bedtime so sleep is uninterrupted.

9. Eating well gives your body and brain the fuel it needs.
 Eat a balanced diet of good healthy foods and not too much junk.

10. Exercise will increase memory and study stamina, as well as making you feel generally more confident.
 Aim for three to four exercise sessions a week, doing 20 or more minutes in each workout session. Always consult your physician before beginning any exercise program.

It's important for students to develop good study habits. Establishing good study habits now, will set you up for success in the future!
