Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation School requires a Full Time Guidance Counselor commencing the 2016-2017 school year.

General Job Description:

The successful candidate is a reliable, detail oriented person with excellent verbal and written communication skills. They must have an appreciation and understanding of Indigenous culture and traditions, and be highly motivated to work with Indigenous children and youth. The successful candidate will guide and counsel students, including resolving student inquiries, issues, and problems while ensuring that appropriate action is taken to the satisfaction of our students, parents and community members in compliance with policies, procedures and legal requirements. This position will assist in keeping the school in perfect working order and will make a difference in the lives of many.

Qualifications:

  • Counseling Psychology, Educational Psychology, Social Work or related field
  • Excellent communication skills, ability to speak to parents and students tactfully
  • Proficient Microsoft Office skills
  • Quick learner; adapts to change well
  • Must be able to work effectively independently and as a team-player with diverse group of staff and students

Job Responsibilities:

Guidance:

  • Provide support services to students, staff and parents; including counseling, assessment and report writing
  • Counsel high school students on post-secondary opportunities and ensure students are meeting requirements
  • Guide students on school issues and out of class concerns
  • Provide direct support to individual students and small groups
  • Consult with other professional staff and outside agencies when necessary

Administration:

  • Provide administrative support to the Principal and Special Education Coordinator by generating standard letters, coordinating projects, and producing reports and other documents as requested
  • File student academic records in appropriate personnel files
  • Print reports, including attendance sheet and monthly student progress
  • Assist in the coordination of special events, such as meetings, information sessions, and graduation ceremonies
  • Order supply of promotional material, registration forms and brochures, study material and other appropriate documents
  • Remain current on school policies and procedures and ongoing school activities
  • Complete other duties as assigned by the Principal

Compensation:

  • To be determined based on experience
